History

HERODES

Teatro Nucleo exists since 1974 as an international laboratory for the art of the actor. Since 1978, the group, founded in Argentina, has been living and working in Ferrara, Italy. Ever since then it has been a constant presence on the international theatre scene with its productions, and a consistent promoter of projects aimed at overcoming political-cultural barriers and boundaries.Teatro Nucleo integrates the work the actor does on his or herself with elements of different cultures and sciences, in the attempt to get nearer to the utopia of the creative liberation of the human being. It is working systematically to find an immediate dialogue between actor and spectator, advocating theatre as a form of communication under threat from the technocratic culture.

Teatro Nucleo means theatre as a workshop of fictions and utopias, where the present-future of a humanity united through creativity can be experimented on; to this end, committed to performances and initiatives aimed at everyone, both in the theatres and in the streets of the world. In close contact with women and men, youngs and adults in open and desperate crises, theatre has revealed its therapeutic virtues above suspicion, regaining by pratice a strong sense which seemed to be loose.

Since the beginning Teatro Nucleo has brought its theatre practice in the places of sufferance: to people in therapy suffering from psychic handicaps and drug addictions. From this twenty years long experience arises CETT, the Center for theatre in therapies, a place where operators of this fields may try out new methodologies and encounter one another.

In its own centre in Ferrara the Nucleo is a crossroads of multiple theatre realities. For four years it has organized the Festival "Copparo and the Theatres". In 1989, together with other 8 theatre companies from East and West Europe and Africa, it has created MIR CARAVAN, a travelling theatre village on wheels, 200 persons, artists and technicians from 19 nationalities, 100 vehicles and caravans, 4 theatre tents and an open-air theatre, the productions of every company and a collective performance created on the road: "Odissea 89". Five month travelling and ten 10 cities-caravanserai: Moskau, Leningrad, Warsaw, Praha, Berlin, Copenhagen, Basel, Lausanne, Blois and at laest Paris, supported by the cities and the governments of the crossed nations.

The theatre of the magnificient utopias is the actual Nucleo repertory with outdoor performances appreciated by the public and the international criticism, like "Quijote!"- inspired by the great novel by Cervantes, a theatre feast with characters, great machines and fire; "Francesco" or the utopia of brothership, the legend of the saint returning in the streets of the metropoles; "Mascarò", inspired by the the novel of the same name by Haroldo Conti, writer and friend assassinated by the argentinean military dictatorship in 1976 ; "Tempesta", inspired by "The Warsaw Ghetto" by Mary Berg, a play about the events that led to the Holocaust of the jews in Europe; and at least "Frankenstein", a show inspired by Shelley's famous novel which, shunning all romantic charm offers a grotesque and frenzied vision of the dramatic story of the Doctor and his creature.

Teatro Nucleo wants to bring in the squares and streets the poetry, the richness and complexity of a theatre made by actors, a theatre that wants to fight against barbarism, dreariness, sadness, for a better quality of life.
