Reso conto delle attività svolte e delle impressioni raccolte durante il viaggio in Lettonia, a conclusione del progetto Openness to diversity through community education (ODEon).

Il primo giorno della nostra permanenza a Liepaja, ha previsto la visita guidata presso la sede della Liepaja Blind Society, a pochi passi dal nostro alloggio, dove i partner lettoni ci hanno accolto ed introdotto alle attività della giornata e dove abbiamo incontrato il gruppo dei partner provenienti da Cipro.
Nell’arco della mattinata abbiamo appreso il grande lavoro di riabilitazione e di inclusione dei soggetti affetti da disabilità legate alla vista svolto negli ultimi decenni dall’Associazione in sinergia con la Municipalità; inoltre siamo stati accompagnati in un tour attraverso le aule e gli ambienti dell’Istituto, dedicati alle più diverse attività manuali, artistiche, e ricreative dove abbiamo potuto osservare gli utenti all’opera.
Nel pomeriggio siamo stati accompagnati presso la Soul Flower Garden, un luogo creato per essere accessibile a chiunque, che lega le sue attività principali alla presenza di orti, e piccoli allevamenti di animali da cortile: una sorta di fattoria didattica.
Qui siamo stati invitati a partecipare ad un laboratorio all’interno di un grande giardino, dove, una volta bendati abbiamo passeggiato affidandoci unicamente all’uso di un bastone e di tutti gli altri sensi.
A chiusura del pomeriggio i partecipanti sono stati invitati a scambiarsi delle impressioni e a prenderne nota.

Il secondo giorno è iniziato con la partenza alle ore 09,00 per Liepaja centro, dove abbiamo visitato il mercato che si sviluppa all’interno di un edificio storico e la piazza antistante.
Per le 10,00 abbiamo raggiunto a piedi la sede di Liepaja Youth House, dove abbiamo partecipato ad un divertente laboratorio artistico di stampa con le patate.
L’Associazione che ci ha ospitati aiuta, incoraggia i giovani, e offre loro l’opportunità di sviluppare competenze e talenti, attraverso l’arte, il teatro, la produzione di audiovisivi, o l’organizzazione di eventi per la comunità.
La sede, che si sviluppa all’interno di un complesso di edifici storici e di un grande cortile, dispone di una grande sala polifunzionale, di uffici e numerosi ambienti di servizio, attrezzati anche per ospitare riunioni e feste per famiglie.
La seconda tappa del giorno è stata la visita al centro Creative Quarter di Darza Street, un incubatore di start-up dove, da qualche anno, un gruppo di giovani ha avviato una realtà che si sta accrescendo.
L’ambiente comprende spazi attrezzati per il coworking, ma anche laboratori individuali per piccole imprese manufatturiere, ateliers di moda, studi professionali di engeneering e design.
Il centro sorge all’interno di un’area militare dismessa, il cui patrimonio immobiliare rientra in un progetto di riqualificazione che vede la realizzazione di spazi espositivi per arte contemporanea e residenze, finanziato con il sostegno dei fondi europei e della municipalità.
A conclusione del secondo giorno, abbiamo visitato il bellissimo Lido di Liepaja.

Il terzo giorno siamo stati accompagnati da Liepaja alla volta del piccolo villaggio di pescatori Jūrmalciems, nella contea di Nica.
Abbiamo raggiunto la sede del public center di Jūrmalciems dove siamo stati accolti dal primo cittadino, il signor A. Petermanis, che ha spiegato il progetto educativo sostenuto dalla municipalità, rivolto all’intera comunità ed improntato sulle tradizioni .
Nella pausa tra i lavori e il pranzo, abbiamo raggiunto la spiaggia che dista poche centinaia di metri dal centro.
Nel pomeriggio siamo ripartiti per la cittadina di Grobina, dove siamo stati ospitati presso la sede della Society of Home Builders “Grove”, una scuola dove si insegnano le arti figurative, la musica e la danza.
Sempre a Grobina, abbiamo conosciuto una singolare realtà, costituita e gestita da un gruppo di giovani presso il Curonian Vikings settlement dediti ad attività di valorizzazione del territorio e delle risorse umane. La sede di questa associazione si trova immersa nella natura di un grande parco lambito da un laghetto, perfetta cornice per pic-nic e attività all’aria aperta.
Dopo la cena, abbiamo fatto ritorno a Liepaja.

Il quarto giorno siamo partiti in tarda mattinata da Liepaja alla volta di Kuldiga, dove abbiamo pranzato, per poi essere accompagnati alla Pelči Special School, una scuola speciale immersa nel verde, che accoglie ed ospita ragazzi affetti da malattie mentali e disabilità fisiche, seguiti e assistiti da insegnanti e personale altamente qualificato.
Come già constatato, visitando le realtà dei giorni precedenti, oltre alle materie istituzionali, un ruolo fondamentale è attribuito all’insegnamento delle arti figurative e performative, che godono sempre di spazi dedicati e adeguatamente attrezzati.
All’interno di questa scuola, peraltro, ci sono aule e laboratori dove vengono insegnate discipline per sviluppare abilità manuali e competenze professionali.
Al termine della nostra visita, nel pomeriggio siamo stati condotti nel centro di Kuldiga, graziosa cittadina dove in quei giornisi svolgeva una festa paesana molto importante per la regione.
Abbiamo passeggiato per le vie del centro storico, ammirato gli edifici e trascorso il tempo libero piacevolmente, attratti dal luna-park, i mercatini e la folla variopinta.
A Kuldiga si è conclusa la giornata, e anche l’ultima sessione del progetto ODEON.
Ospitati per la cena presso un ristorantino tipico, ne sono seguiti la consegna degli attestati di partecipazione e i saluti di rito fra i partner delle tre nazioni aderenti al progetto.

Following is a brief account of the activities carried out and the impressions collected during the trip to Latvia at the end of the project Openness to diversity through community education (ODEon).
July 10, 2017
On the first day of our stay in Liepaja, we had a guided tour at the Liepaja Blind Society, a few steps from our accommodation, where Latvian partners welcomed and introduced us to the activities of the day and where we met the partner group coming from Cyprus. In the morning, we learned the great work of rehabilitation and inclusion of people with disabilities related to the view that the Association has done in recent decades in synergy with the Municipality; We were also accompanied on a tour through the classrooms and environments of the Institute, devoted to the most diverse manual, artistic, and recreational activities where we could watch the users at work. In the afternoon we were accompanied to the Soul Flower Garden, a place created to be accessible to anyone, which links his main activities in the presence of gardens, and courtyard animals: a kind of didactic farm. Here we were invited to participate in a lab in a large garden where, blindfolded, we walked by relying solely on the use of a stick and all other senses. At the closing of the afternoon participants were invited to exchange impressions and to note.

The second day started with departure at 09.00 to Liepaja center, where we visited the market that develops inside a historic building and on the square in front.
At 10.00 we walked on to the Liepaja Youth House, where we participated in a funny print lab with potatoes.
The Association that hosts us helps, encourages young people and offers them the opportunity to develop skills and talents through art, theater, audiovisual production, or community event organization.
The venue, which develops into a complex of historic buildings and a large courtyard, features a large multifunctional hall, offices and numerous service environments, equipped also to host family gatherings and celebrations.
The second stage of the day was to visit the Creative Quarter Center on Darza Street, a start-up incubator where, for some years, a group of young people has started a growing business reality.
The environment includes spaces for coworking, but also individual labs for small manufacturing companies, fashion studios, professional engeneering and design studios.
The center rises within a dismantled military area, whose real estate is part of a redevelopment project that seeks the realization of exhibition spaces for contemporary art and residences, funded with the support of European and municipal funds.
At the end of the second day, we visited the beautiful Liepaja Lido.
July 12, 2017
On the third day the Latvian partners led us from Liepaja to the small fishing village Jūrmalciems, in the county of Nica. We reached the headquarters of the Jūrmalciems public center where we were welcomed by the first citizen, Mr A. Petermanis, who explained the tradition-based educational project supported by the municipality. In the break between work and lunch, we reached the beach just a few hundred yards from the center. In the afternoon we left for the town of Grobina, where we were hosted at the headquarters of the Grove Society of Home Builders, a school where the arts, music and dance are taught. Always at Grobina, we met a singular reality set up and managed by a group of young people at the Curonian Vikings settlement devoted to territorial enhancement activities and human resources. The headquarters of this association is immersed in the nature of a large park lapped by a pond, perfect for picnic and outdoor activities. After dinner, we returned to Liepaja.

On the fourth day we left late in the morning from Liepaja to Kuldiga, where we had lunch, and were accompanied to the Pelči Special School, a school surrounded by greenery, which welcomes and hosts people with mental illness and physical disabilities, followed and assisted by highly qualified teachers and staff. As already noted, by visiting the reality of the previous days, in addition to the institutional education subjects, a fundamental role is attributed to the teaching of the figurative and performative arts, which always have dedicated and adequately equipped spaces. Inside this school, however, there are classrooms and workshops where disciplines are taught to develop manual skills and professional skills. At the end of our visit, in the afternoon we were taken to the center of Kuldiga, a pretty town where on those days a very important festival. We have walked through the streets of the old town, admired the buildings and spent the leisure pleasantly, attracted by the fun fair, the markets and the colorful crowd. In Kuldiga we ended the day, and also the last session of the ODEON project. We was hosted for dinner in a typical restaurant, where attendance certificates were delivered to each participant.
